Original photography has always been a favorite with collectors and historians as it captures things exactly as they happened and offers us a look into the past that we might not otherwise ever get to see. In recent years, the area of photograph collecting has seen a great boom as collectors gravitate to Type 1 certified original photos. As with most areas of collecting, photos with major stars, such as Ruth or Gehrig, and other Hall of Famers seem to generate the most excitement. Another popular subcategory revolves around photography used to produce cards. This auction features a wide array of Type 1 photographs, most of which fall into the most popular collecting categories. In the card category, this auction features the original photograph used to produce Jackie Robinson’s 1950 Bowman card, Ty Cobb’s 1928 Star Player Candy card, and the iconic 1948 Bowman George Mikan rookie card. Several original photographs directly from the Estate of Walter Johnson are offered, including stunning images capturing him with Christy Mathewson and Ty Cobb. Babe Ruth is well represented in images spanning his career and even in one incredibly rare oversized image dating to 1915, which shows him tending bar in his father’s Baltimore saloon. The history of the game is captured in dozens of original photographs, all certified as original Type 1, presented throughout this auction.
