Exceedingly rare and extremely attractive example of Babe Ruth from the W503 series. While little is known about the W503 set with respect to its precise method of distribution, it is believed that they were issued with candy or gum, but that has yet to be confirmed. Most examples that have surfaced over the years have originated from the West Coast, so there is a high likelihood that they were issued regionally, which explains their great rarity today. The 1922 W503 series is one of the most substantial and overlooked sets from the 1920s, most likely due to their extreme rarity. This classic 1920-era card issue includes many of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the decade, and obviously, Ruth is the key card to the set. This is the first example of this rare card that we have ever offered! These black-and-white real-photo cards (all images are unique to this set) measure 1-3/4 by 2-3/4 inches and have blank-backs. The player’s name and respective team is printed on the front of the card with the card number printed in either the lower left or right corners. Encapsulated as Authentic by PSA (submitted by REA) due to color added in the background to fill in two creases, otherwise the card displays as Very Good with a strong image, even wear to the corners, and centered to the left. The blank reverse is lightly soiled. This is an outstanding example of one of Babe Ruth's rarest and most classic 1920s cards and one that would be a worthy addition to any high-quality Babe Ruth or prewar-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
