Presented is a rarely-offered near-complete set of 197 different (of the 200 in the set) plus five variations for a total of 202 cards from the E135 Collins-McCarthy series, highlighted by twenty-five Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Harry Heilmann, and Casey Stengel, plus extremely desirable key cards of "Black Sox" members (Eddie Cicotte, Chick Gandil, Hap Felsch, Buck Weaver, and Lefty Williams), and many other key and star cards. Missing three cards (#80 Hornsby, 82 Jackson, and 147 Ruth, all offered as separate lots in this auction) for completion. Issued in 1917 by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. of San Francisco, the 200-card black-and-white E135 set was the company's only venture into issuing cards of Major Leaguers. Unlike the somewhat similar 1916 M101-4/5 Sporting News set, these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public, and so are naturally much rarer, and were also larger than M101-4/5 cards. The E135 set was produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear, and has a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. The set is commonly referred to as issued by Collins-McCarthy, but, as most collectors know, several different companies actually issued the set. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well. All of the cards in this collection have Collins-McCarthy backs. This near-set includes both variations for cards #76, 90, 121, 146, and 190. Condition of the set is 8% Vg-Ex, 39% Vg, 22% Gd, and 31% lesser (including one miscut). We have selected six cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #2 Alexander (Fr-Gd), 11 Baker (Vg), 12 Bancroft (mark on reverse, otherwise Fr), 25 Carey (Vg), 28 Cicotte (Black Sox, Vg), 30 Cobb (GOOD 2), 31 Collins (Fr), 36 Crawford (Pr), 45 Evers (Fr), 46 Faber (Gd), 47 Felsch (Black Sox, erased pencil on front, otherwise Vg), 55 Gandil (Black Sox, Gd), 71 Heilmann (PSA Authentic, slight trim), 79 Hooper (Vg-Ex), 86 Jennings (erased pencil on front, otherwise Gd+), 87 Johnson (GOOD+ 2.5), 107 Maranville (Vg-Ex), 108 Marquard (Vg), 113 McGraw (Gd+), 137 Rice (Pr-Fr), 139 Rixey (Pr-Fr), 142 Roush (Fr), 150 Schalk (Vg), 162 Sisler (Pr), 166 Speaker (VG 3), 168 Stengel (Vg), 180 Wagner (GOOD 2), 185 Weaver (Black Sox, VG-EX+ 4.5), 187 Wheat (Vg), 190a Williams (Black Sox, Vg-Ex), and 190b Williams (Black Sox, Gd). It is very rare to find this legendary issue offered as a complete set. In fact, this is the first complete or near-complete (missing three cards) set we have ever offered. This is a remarkable offering and an extremely attractive complete set (less three cards) that presents exceptionally well and far better than suggested by its modest technical grades. The SMR value for just two of the graded cards (Cobb and Wagner) is $3,500 (not including the 200 additional cards). Total: 202 cards (near-complete set of 197 plus 5 variations). Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
