Presented is a collection of ten high-grade Hall of Famers from the 1916 M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News sets, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. Seven cards are M101-4s and three cards are M101-5 Sporting News (as noted). The lot consists of the following: EX/NM 80 (5 cards): #55 Faber, 72 Griffith, 142 Rixey, 177 Tinker (M101-5), and 186 Wheat (M101-5). EX+ 70 (2 cards): #9 Baker and 84 Hooper. EX 60 (3 cards): #34 Collins, 90 Jennings, and 110 Marquard (M101-5). Nine cards have blank backs and one card has the Sporting News advertisement printed on reverse (Hooper). This is a very sharp-looking high-grade collection of these popular real-photo cards, comprised exclusively of Hall of Famers. Many collectors think this issue, compared to other sets of the era, represents one of the best values among classic vintage cards, especially regarding Hall of Famers. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades is $1,795. Total: 10 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
