Exceptional sample card of Tom Needham from this unusual sepia-toned 1910 cabinet-card issue which features Cubs and White Sox players, issued by the Spaulding & Merrick Tobacco Company to promote its Plow Boy Tobacco brand. Their rarity is related to the fact that they were issued only in the Chicago area. Plow Boy Tobacco cards measure 5-3/4 x 8 inches. They are easily one of the rarest of all twentieth-century tobacco issues, and of additional note, these cards show players in poses that are unique to this set. Plow Boy Tobacco cards were issued with two different advertising reverses, one with a simple advertisement and another with the same advertisement along with a checklist of premiums available. The offered example features the advertising reverse with the list of premiums offered. The card displays a crisp image, with several light creases and even wear to the corners. The reverse is boldly printed and displays a few pencil marks near the lower right edge. Without respect to these flaws, which would cause the card to technically grade modestly, it presents as Vg to Vg-Ex. A superb example worthy of even the most advanced sample or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
