Collection of thirty-two 1910 S74 Tobacco Silks, including twelve Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson. The collection is composed of fourteen of the slightly larger "colored" S74 silks, including six HOFers, plus eighteen of the smaller “white” S74 silks, including two commons with the original brown advertising paper backing and six HOFers. (Note: The slightly larger "colored" silks were not issued with advertising backs.) All of the silks have slight fraying to the edges (which is standard for this series). The colored silks all (except two) have the factory number along the top and the cigarette manufacturer (Old Mill) along the bottom. The collection grades Vg-Ex to Ex overall with a few Fr to Gd. This collection is loaded with highlights, and would be an ideal foundation for the assembly of an extremely impressive mid- to high-grade set. The breakdown of thirty-two silks is as follows (quantities in parentheses): White Silks (18):
Bates, Bender (HOF), Bresnahan (HOF), Brown (HOF), Chance (HOF), Chase (measures small), Delahanty, Jones, Knight (with Old Mill backing), Myers (with Turkey Red backing displaying some paper loss), Phillippe, Speaker (HOF), Stone, Street, Summers, Tannehill, Tinker (HOF, measures small), and Turner. Colored Silks (14):
Archer, Chance (HOF), Cobb (HOF, blue, thread holes around perimeter), Hoblitzell, Huggins (HOF, thread holes around perimeter), Johnson (HOF, blue, thread holes around perimeter), Krause, Leach, Marquard (HOF), McGraw (HOF), Moriarty, Needham, Steinfeldt, and Titus. By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a particularly attractive collection of these colorful tobacco premiums, including an extremely high concentration of Hall of Famers. Total: 32 silks. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
