Graded VG/EX+ 55 by SGC. This is one of only two examples graded at this level by SGC with only one higher (which has a Miner's Extra back)! Exceptionally strong example of the key card of Ty Cobb from the 1912 T227 Series of Champions, issued by Miners Extra and Honest Long Cut, far better than usually found for this very condition-sensitive tobacco issue. This is an outstanding example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most unusual tobacco cards. The T227 Cobb is literally more than 100 times rarer than hisT205 or T206 tobacco cards, but its much greater rarity is far from being fully reflected in its value. This may, in part, be because T227s, which were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling, rarely survive in technically high grades and so are not a focus of collectors of high-grade cards. T227 “Series of Champions” are unique in design. There are only 25 cards in the set, including four ballplayers. This stunning example of Cobb is perfectly clean both front and back, with striking colors, no stains, outstanding centering, and light, even wear at the corners. A very light wrinkle near the upper-left corner is responsible for the conservatively assigned grade. The reverse features a biography of Cobb and advertising for Honest Long Cut Tobacco. This is a tremendous high-grade example for this rare, uniquely designed, and in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. One of the best of all Ty Cobb cards! Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
