Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. 1887 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association issued by Chas. Gross & Co. All Kalamazoo Bats team cards are extremely rare. This team is highlighted by Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson and Harry Stovey, a major star of the day who many believe deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, both of whom are standing in the back-row center. The offered example displays an extremely strong photograph with ideal contrast and perfect focus. Several minor flaws, which are clearly present, are responsible for the modestly assigned grade. The Athletics is a particularly interesting card in the series as most of the Kalamazoo Bats individual player cards, of course, feature Philadelphia players. The players on this team card were also each honored with an individual Kalamazoo Bats card. Only six different teams are known to exist. No new teams have been discovered since the 1960s, so the set appears to be complete at six. This is a solid low-grade example of this nineteenth-century tobacco-card rarity. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
