Presented is a magnificent 1888 N173 Old Judge cabinet card of St. Louis Browns infielder Arlie Latham in a batting stance (pose #274-4). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby find of fifteen N173s, including five Hall of Famers and two Dogs Head cards, discovered by a non-collector in Maine among the possessions of his grandfather, all consigned to this auction. The image on this card is very bold, with strong contrast and tremendous detail. The extraordinary quality of the photograph allows one to see the laces on his shoes. Both upper corners have a crease and the reverse has a small spot of surface paper loss. This is an exceptionally example from one of the nineteenth century's most substantial and highly regarded sets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
