Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers with Boston, posed (#43-2) in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby find of fifteen N173s, including five Hall of Famers and two Dogs Head cards, discovered by a non-collector in Maine among the possessions of his grandfather, all consigned to this auction. This is one of the most impressive of all Dan Brouthers cards. The image on this card is extraordinarily bold with extremely strong contrast. The mount has two creases, one on the upper left corner, and the other is on the lower right corner. Light soiling on the front and back and some minor surface wear on the bottom border, which has affected some of the lettering on the Goodwin advertisement. Brouthers was a five-time batting champion who led the NL in slugging percentage each of his first six full seasons, and is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
