Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level by PSA with none higher! Exceptional high-grade example of Boston Red Sox third baseman Harry Lord from this very rare and classic 1910-era candy set. The E103 Williams Caramel set is easily distinguished from other caramel sets of the era by the bright red background highlighting each player's portrait. As noted on each card along the lower margin, the Williams Candy Company was located in Oxford, Pa., and this candy was very likely issued on a somewhat regional basis. This fact almost certainly accounts for their great rarity. When they are found, they usually have serious condition problems, which is not surprising considering that these cards were issued to children, one card per package of candy. A grade of EX may not sound impressive, but it is extraordinary for an E103! The offered example is crisp and clean, with a flawless image, deep red background, light wear to the four corners, and centered slightly to the bottom. Clean blank reverse, with a very faint indentation mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. This is a sensational high-grade example that would make a worthy and significant addition to any advanced E103 Williams Caramel or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
