Extremely rare E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" partial set consisting of seventeen of the thirty cards in the set, plus six duplicates for a total of twenty-three E98 cards, highlighted by six Hall of Famers. Each card is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (except for three PSA as noted). E98s are found with four different background colors: blue, green, orange, and red. All cards in this lot feature a red background (unless otherwise noted). The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. SGC Grading Composite: One PSA EX-MT 6: McLean (green background). One VG/EX 50: Clarke (HOF). One VG+ 45: Meyers. Nine VG 40: Bresnahan (HOF), Davis (green background), Dooin (PSA VG 3, green background), Evers (HOF, green background), two Ford (one with a green background), Kling (green background), Mclean, and Mullin. One GOOD+ 35: Davis (orange background). Five GOOD 30: Bridwell (orange background), Coombs (PSA GOOD 2, orange background), Dooin, Tenny, and Vaughn (orange background). Three FAIR 20: Coombs, Tinker (HOF, blue background), and Walsh (HOF, PSA FAIR 1.5, orange background). Two POOR 10: Clarke (HOF, blue background) and Dahlen. This group represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a relatively affordable foundation for the assembly and completion of this popular and rare set. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the five half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $2,920. Total: 23 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
