Graded VG 40 by SGC. Very attractive 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Hall of Famer John Ward (#478-3 pose) of the New York Giants. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League Baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players League. The card is extremely crisp and clean, both front and back, with particularly strong photo contrast and detail. The minor corner wear (predominately on the upper and lower right corners) keeps this gem from an even higher grade. This is an exceptionally strong, high-quality Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer John Ward. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
