Graded EX 5 by PSA. Exceptionally high-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a throwing pose from the very scarce E95 Philadelphia Caramel series. This 25-card set was issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. Mathewson, of course, is one of the key cards in the set. This is also one of Mathewson's most highly regarded cards from any set, and is considerably rarer than the popular T205 and T206 cards of Matty from the same era. The E95 set was almost certainly inspired by the great success that tobacco companies were having with their cards. This set is of all the greater significance in that the E95 artwork was not reissued by other manufacturers, as was so widespread with other “E” card issues. The designs used in E95 are unique to the set. These cards have a very distinctive look to them and the artwork is definitely a cut above that of their rivals of the time. Due to the thin stock on which they are printed, E95 Philadelphia Caramel cards are rarely found in such high grade. This card is bright and clean, both front and back, with a bold yellow background, a perfect surface with no creases, just a hint of even wear to the corners (slightly more so to the top and bottom right), and outstanding centering. The reverse is also virtually perfect, featuring a very boldly printed checklist for the set. This card is in exceptional condition, especially for a caramel card, which because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. A grade of EX 5 might not be that big a deal for a T206 or a 1933 Goudey, but it is an extremely high grade for an E95. Only seven examples grade higher out of 119 evaluated to date by PSA. This is a stunning example of one of Mathewson’s most striking cards from one of the most popular and colorful of all “E” card issues, and one that would be a worthy addition to any exceptional-quality classic Hall of Fame, E95, or Christy Mathewson card collection.
