Attractive example of Hall of Famer Cy Young from the E94 George Close Candy set. This is a particularly fascinating card of Young both because he is identified as “Old” Cy Young along the bottom border of the card, and the image of Young used on this card pictures him in a Boston Red Sox uniform even though he is identified with Cleveland on the card. Advanced collectors of "E" cards will immediately recognize the caramel-card set designated as "E94" as a thorn in their sides. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult. The E94 caramel card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This example is bright and clean, with a bold red background, excellent centering with a slight tilt to the image, and honest wear to the corners. Presenting as Very Good from the front, a piece of tape on ther reverse accounts for the technically accurate grade of SGC FAIR 20. This is a very desirable example of the legendary Cy Young from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
