A presentable pair of 1911 E94 George Close Candy cards featuring legendary Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Each card is graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC. 1)
Ty Cobb (PSA PR-FR 1). The obvious flaws are heavy creasing and extremely rounded corners. 2)
Honus Wagner (SGC POOR 10). The obvious flaws are heavy creasing, extremely rounded corners, and paper loss on the back. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. These modestly graded examples provide an excellent opportunity to acquire presentable yet relatively affordable alternatives to far more expensive higher-grade examples of these classic cards. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
