Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Extraordinarily rare nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco card featuring German Emperor Wilhelm I. These N167 nonsport cards are very similar to the N167 Old Judge baseball series, with a vertical advertisement printed in blue on the reverse (as opposed to the horizontal back with dark-green printing used on the baseball series). This example offers a crisp image and outstanding centering, with even corner rounding and moderate creasing. The reverse displays bold blue text set against an off-white background, with a small erased pencil mark. This is an attractive nonsport sample card from one of the rarest and most significant of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues, and one that would sell for many thousands of dollars if this were a baseball player from the same series. N167s are the earliest cards issued by Goodwin & Company.
Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
