Rare tin display box, dating from the early 1900s, that once housed packages of "Polar Chewing and Smoking Tobacco." Each of the side panels features a color illustration of a polar bear holding a large package of Polar Tobacco. The hinged front lid is lettered "Polar Bear Tobacco," while the front panel reads "Always Fresh." An illustrated image of a Polar Tobacco package also appears on the front panel. While we have handled porcelain signs issued in promotion of this tobacco brand, this is the first large retail tin display we have ever seen, let alone offered. The box (18 x 14 x 12 inches) displays heavy wear, including small dents, abrasions, scratches, and fading to the paint on the front panel. The interior lid chain is detached from its side mounting clasp. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
