Complete 25-card set of N99 Duke "Battle Scenes" cards. Sharp-looking set of these scarce and very colorful nineteenth-century tobacco cards. Issued with Duke's Cigarettes Honest Long Cut Tobacco, these cards measure 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches and feature a striking colorful lithograph of a scene from the American Civil War with a caption on front. On the reverse is an explanation of the scene along with a checklist for the set and advertising for Gail & Ax Navy Long Cut (except one Duke). Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide checklist. SGC grading composite: One NM 84: #2. Three EX/NM 80: #12, 18, and 25. Two EX+ 70: #10 and 14. Six EX 60: #4, 5, 8, 15, 17, and 21. Two VG/EX+ 55: #7 and 19. Two VG/EX 50: #6 and 16. One VG+ 45: #23. Six VG 40: #1, 3, 9, 11, 13 (Honest Long Cut back), and 22. One GOOD+ 35: #24. One FAIR 20: #20. Even the lesser-graded examples in this set present at a far superior level than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades and these few cards have in most cases been downgraded due to small areas of paper loss on the reverse. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal and is especially popular among nonsport collectors for its design and historical subject matter. Duke's "Battle Scenes" are rarely offered as a complete set, in fact, this is only the second complete set we have ever sold in the last thirteen years. This set is from the collection of a very advanced longtime nonsport collector. Total: 25 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
