Presented is a complete set of fifty 1888 N15 Allen & Ginter "Great Generals” cards, all graded and encapsulated (except one) by SGC (submitted by REA). This is a very strong set of these extremely striking nineteenth-century tobacco cards with twenty-six cards ranging from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt, seven are Vg, and seventeen slightly lesser (mostly Fr to Gd). SGC Condition Composite: Two EX/NM 80: Cromwell and Stewart. Two EX+ 70: Sheridan and Wolfe. Thirteen EX 60: Blucher, Burgoyne, Crook, Frederick the Great, Grant, A. Jackson, Johnston, Lafayette, Longstreet, MacMahon, Skobeleff, Soult, and Thomas. Two VG/EX+ 55: Custer and Kosciusko. Seven VG/EX 50: Beauregard, Boulanger, Cornwallis, Gordon, Napier, Washington, and Worth. Seven VG 40: Caesar, Hancock, Logan, Ney, Pulaski, Putnam, and Wellington. Four GOOD+ 35: Hampton, "Stonewall" Jackson, Stuart, and Von Moltke. Three GOOD 30: Garibaldi, Hannibal, and Sherman. Seven FAIR 20: Fremont, Halleck, Harrison, Havelock, Napoleon, Scott, and Wolseley. One POOR 10: McClellan. One Authentic: Lee. One raw: Meade (bottom clipped). Issued with Allen & Ginter's Cigarettes, the set is entitled "Great Generals," and as the set title implies, these cards feature great Generals from all walks of life. Each insert card measures 2.75 x 1.5 inches and features a portrait image of a historical figure (such as George Washington, US Grant, Robert E. Lee, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, etc.) on the front with a checklist presented on the reverses. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal. Allen & Ginter's "Great Generals" are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by both historical collectors and nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 50 cards.
