Large-format program from Bob Marley & The Wailers' 1979 concert tour of Japan, signed by Marley on an interior page. Marley has inscribed a full-page photo of himself in black marker, "to Jimmy/Jah Rastafari/Live/Bob Marley/Wailers," with both the signature and inscription grading "10." The "Jimmy" to whom the program is inscribed is musician Jimmy Papa. Papa's father, Tony Papa, was the vice president of Associated Booking Corporation, which was the company that booked Marley's 1979 tour of Japan. Jimmy Papa traveled with the group on the tour and this is one of a number of Marley signed items, all personally inscribed to him, that he consigned to auction in 2007. (When this piece was originally purchased by our consignor in 2007 it came with a letter of provenance from Papa. Unfortunately, the letter has separated from the piece, but we are including the original page from the auction catalog that specifically mentions the letter and also pictures the other items personalized to Papa from Marley, that were sold at the same time as this piece.) Marely passed away in 1981 at the age of thirty-six, resulting in the scarcity of his signature today. This is the first item signed by Marley that we have ever offered and the fact that it is on what is basically a large photo of the legendary reggae musician makes it especially appealing. The twenty-eight page program (10 x 14.5 inches) displays moderate handling wear and is in Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication and Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
