Business check, issued by Maclen (Music) LTD, signed by John Lennon (1940-1980) just one year after the breakup of The Beatles in 1970. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature graded GEM MINT 10. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of only two John Lennon check signatures to receive a grade of GEM MINT 10 from PSA/DNA, making it an especially rare and desirable example. The check, dated March 18, 1971, and drawn on the National Westminster Bank Limited, is made out to "Burns, Burr + Co. Ltd" in the amount of "£301-65." It is flawlessly signed in black felt-tip pen by Lennon at the bottom. Maclen was the music publishing company founded jointly by Paul McCartney and John Lennon in the 1960s. John Lennon signed checks are not only extremely rare (this is only the second we have ever offered) but also highly prized by collectors for many reasons, including the inherent authenticity they provide with regard to the signature. John Lennon is one of the most important and influential musicians of the twentieth century whose tragic death in 1980 at the hands of a disturbed gunmen has since elevated his status to that of cultural icon. Because of both his popularity and early demise, the demand for John Lennon signed items today far exceeds the supply. Accordingly, the economics of that situation has resulted in his signature being one of the most commonly forged in the hobby. For that reason, Lennon's signature on a check represents a particularly ideal form for many collectors. The check (8 x 3.5 inches) displays a normal bank cancellation stamp on the front and a staple hole in the upper left corner. In Excellent condition overall. This is without question one of the, if not the, finest John Lennon signed checks in the hobby and one of only two examples to receive a signature grade of GEM MINT 10 from PSA/DNA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $10,000+.
