Panoramic postcard featuring the 1909 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, the first Championship club in franchise history. The tri-fold postcard captures twenty-six members of the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates standing shoulder to shoulder in front of the grandstand, including Honus Wagner, manager Fred Clarke, Babe Adams, Vic Willis, and Deacon Phillippe. Printing along the base reads "Pittsburgh Base Ball Club. National League Champions 1909" and "Copyrighted 1909, Pittsburgh Athletic Club." The photographer's credit appears in the lower right corner "R. W. Johnston Studios of Pittsburgh 1909." Given the caption, this postcard was most likely issued just prior to the World Series. The card is not addressed or mailed, but there is a vintage pencil notation on the reverse that reads “here the Pittsburg base ball team that won the pennant at detroit last week.” The postcard (14 x 3.25 inches) displays heavy wear at the two fold lines and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
