Roberto Clemente H&B signature-model ("U1") bat dating from the 1961 to 1963 manufacturing period. Graded GU 9 by PSA/DNA. The bat displays heavy use throughout its entire length, including many ball marks and stitch impressions on all sides of the barrel, cleat marks, and a repaired crack in the handle. Clemente's uniform number ("21") is written on the knob in black marker. Clemente posted batting averages of .351, .312, and .320, respectively, during the three-year span 1961-1963, with the 1961 mark representing the first of his four batting titles. A great humanitarian as well as an accomplished ballplayer, Clemente died tragically in plane crash in 1972 while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The following year he became the first Hispanic ballplayer elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (the Hall waived its normal five-year waiting period in his honor). Length: 36 inches. Weight: 33.4 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA. Opening Bid $2,500. Estimate $10,000+.
