Rare Jackie Robinson wristwatch issued circa 1949. The colorful watch face features a full length image of Robinson in uniform set against the backdrop of a baseball diamond. Robinson's facsimile signature appears to the right of his image. A depiction of a baseball upon the hour hand completes the attractive baseball motif. "Swiss Made" is printed at the base of the face. The watch, which is in working order, displays moderate wear, including a few light scratches to the glass and oxidation on the reverse. The black-leather wristband appears brand new and may be a replacement (all other examples of this wristwatch that we have seen have a brown wristband.) No manufacturer is listed, but it comes in a Hilton watch case and box. (We have no way to confirm if this is the original box, we have never seen another example with its box.) It is our understanding that this watch was marketed mainly to African Americans following Robinson's 1949 MVP season. If so, it would certainly explain its rarity today. This is the first example we have ever offered and we have seen only a handful of others over the years. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
