Significant news photo capturing Jackie Robinson as a member of the Montreal Royals just prior to his professional debut on April 18, 1946. Certified as an original Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA. The photo captures Robinson smiling as he poses in his home uniform. A credit stamp reading "Property of the Star Please Return" appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "Apr 17 1946." A number of vintage editorial notations appear on the reverse as well, including Robinson's name and position, and "TSN Archives" (The Sporting News). This photo was published the day before Robinson made his historic debut with Montreal in a game against the Jersey City Giants at Roosevelt Stadium in New Jersey on April 18th. Robinson had four hits, including a home run in his first game with the Royals, leading the club to a 14-1 victory. He later earned the league MVP honors at season's end. This is the earliest photo we can recall seeing of Robinson as a member of Montreal during his first season of organized ball. The photo (5 x 7 inches) displays a number of minor abrasions on the front. A Sporting News Archives hologram label has been affixed to the reverse. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
