Addendum (4/3/17): Please note that the printed catalog description identified one of the team members pictured here as Turkey Stearnes, which is incorrect.

Vintage photo capturing fourteen members of the 1934 Kansas City Monarchs posing together on the field. The photographer's credit (illegible) and date, "7-4-34" are printed in small, white lettering in the lower left corner. The caption along the base, also printed in small, white lettering reads "K C Monarchs - Nat Park - Spok WN 7-4-34." Included among the team members pictured here are Hall of Famers "Bullet Joe" Rogan and Andy Cooper, as well as Newt Allen and Chet Brewer. This is just one of fewer than four examples of this photo we have ever seen and the first we have offered. The photo also has a unique provenance. Newt Allen originally gave this photo to Oscar, the team's batboy, and evidence of that presentation can be found on the reverse, where Allen has inscribed it in blue ink "To Oscar from Allen Short Stop/Kansas City Monarchs." Years later, during the 1980s, Oscar gave the photo to prominent Negro League historian Phil Dixon, who in turn gave it to our consignor. This photo appears to be a later restrike of the original photo, but it is still an incredible piece. Vintage Negro League photos are exceedingly rare, especially those picturing prominent clubs such as the Monarchs. It should be noted that of the few other examples of this photo we have seen, this is by far the finest in terms of condition. The photo (9.75 x 7.75 inches) displays a number of light scratches and creases (most are only visible when viewed at certain angles), as well as a tiny tear along the right border. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
