Vintage 1921 news photo capturing Babe Ruth holding a pigeon on the field at the Polo Grounds. An Underwood & Underwood credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does a 1996 Christie’s hologram label indicating that this photo originates from the Baseball Magazine archives. Accompanied by a paper news caption (detached from the reverse), dated 9/27/21, which explains the incongruous image. In full: “’Babe’ Ruth,’ Yank hero, is shown holding one the carrier pigeons which yesterday carried the score, inning-by-inning, of the ‘Little World’s Series’ game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians all the way from the Polo Grounds to the Lower East Side of New York. With Babe is Frank Fabzio, owner of the pigeons.” Card collectors will immediately recognize this image, because a similar one of Ruth releasing the pigeon appears on a 1922 E121 American Caramel card. The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays a few light creases, edge tears, and two small pieces of mounting tape on the reverse. In Very Good condition. Please note: This photo was submitted to PSA/DNA to determine if it was a Type 1 image, but the results of the examination were “inconclusive” (meaning PSA/DNA is unable to categorize it, with certainty, as either a Type 1 or a Type 3).
