Photo of Babe Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees in 1921, taken by noted baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. Certified as an original Type 1 photograph by PSA/DNA. As was Bain's custom, Ruth's name and team designation ("Ruth N. Y.") , as well as a partial production number have been etched into the original negative and appear in white lettering along the top of the image. The photo captures Ruth in uniform at the Polo Grounds as he poses on the top step of the dugout. A Bain News Service credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does a Culver Service stamp. A typed notation on the reverse reads "Babe Ruth left field of Yankees Sept. 27, 1921." Ruth was the king of the baseball world at the time of this photo, having just broken his previous year's single-season home run record of 54. On September 26th, one day prior to this photo being taken, Ruth belted home runs 57 and 58 in an 8-7 win against the Indians in New York. He finished the year with 59 home runs, a record which stood for another seven years, until he once again topped himself with 60 home runs in 1927. The photo (5 x 7 inches) displays a small chip in the lower right border and minor edge wear. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
