Rare uncatalogued pose of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner in a batting stance from this extremely rare vignette real-photo postcard series issued in 1908. All cards from this series are rare, but throughout our years of handling examples from this set, we have never seen this particular pose, and we don't see this pose listed on checklists we have found, which makes this an exciting, newly discovered pose that has somehow evaded collectors for over 100 years! (Up until this point, the only known pose for Wagner pictures him sitting on the ground.) The Standard Catalog lists nine known players within the set, but notes that it is believed that the complete set is fifteen cards and "new additions may be possible." This is a very unusual and distinctive set featuring only Pittsburgh Pirates players, and it is believed that these cards were originally sold as souvenirs at Pittsburgh's Exhibition Field in 1908. Each postcard pictures the player in uniform and includes the player's last name, team, position, and year printed in white lettering within the body of the photo. This issue, designated "PC800," is distinguished by its irregular vignette photo borders and traditional divided postcard reverse. The offered card is technically in Fair condition, with a minor crease, rounded corners, and light soiling. The reverse is addressed and mailed as intended with a postmark of "Jun 19 1912." It should be noted that SGC declined to encapsulate this postcard due to its uncataloged nature. According to our consignor, this postcard first appeared at a Philly show in late 2015 and was owned by a general postcard collector (not specific to sports) from the local Pennsylvania area. While collectors will be most interested in the card for its rarity and possibly unique nature, it does also present very well. This is an exceptional card which would, at any time, be a worthwhile addition to any Hall of Famer or baseball postcard collection, but in this instance, may offer a special opportunity to acquire a newly discovered pose from this scare and desirable PC800 postcard set. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
