Rare Boston Red Sox World Championship pennant dating from the team's 1912 to 1918 dynasty. The attractive design of this oversized red felt pennant displays the team name, "Red Sox," in large white "shadow box" letters alongside a circular illustration featuring a crossed bats, ball, and bases motif that reads "Boston Red Sox Base Ball Club - Worlds Champions." The absence of a year as part of the design of this piece has always led to some ambiguity regarding its date of issue; however, the Vintage Pennant Price Guide II
(by Mike Egner, published 2013; highly recommended!) attributes it to circa 1916. All Boston Red Sox pennants dating from the period 1912 through 1918 are extremely rare and we have only seen a few other examples over the years. The pennant (34.5 inches in length) displays numerous tiny insect holes and the lower set of tassels has been detached from the pennant (the torn tassels accompany the pennant). Despite those flaws, the pennant remains bright and attractive, with very little crazing to the painted letters, and displays at a higher level than that suggested by its technically accurate grade of Very Good. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
