Graded VG+ 45 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive example of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from the PC760 Rose Postcard set, one of the rarest and most beautifully designed baseball-card sets ever produced. It is fascinating to note that the portrait used on this extraordinary card is the very same that appears on several other famous Mathewson cards, including 1902 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet, 1904 Allegheny Co., 1910 E103 Williams Caramel, 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life, and 1915 E145 Cracker Jack. This is obviously an iconic and very popular pose! The offered card is bright and clean, both front and back, with a flawless portrait image and very light corner wear. Presenting as Excellent from the front, the card has been downgraded due to heavy age toning on approximately 90% of the reverse. It appears the card was stored with corner mounts as each corner on the reverse is clean with no age toning. The card has never been mailed and has no writing on its traditional postcard reverse. This is one of only five examples of Mathewson ever graded by PSA and SGC combined, and it is only the third Rose postcard of Mathewson that we can recall ever offering. This is an extraordinary and stunning example of one of the key Hall of Famers from this beautiful and rare set, and one that would make an outstanding addition to any PC760 set, Hall of Fame type-card collection, or Christy Mathewson player collection. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000++.
