Collection of twenty-five "magic-lantern" glass slides, each picturing one or more major league baseball players, including Joe Jackson, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner. While similar in appearance to glass negatives, these specially prepared glass slides display positive images that would be projected on to the screen at theaters through the use of a magic-lantern slide machine. Most magic lantern glass slides produced at the time were theatrical in nature, and featured promotional images for upcoming films. Some, like these, however, were intended for either educational or entertainment purposes. Baseball magic lantern slides are rare, and we have only seen a small number of examples over the years. This collection is almost certainly the largest single offering ever to appear at auction and is notable for the number of star players represented. Included here are nine slides picturing a single player, three showing scenes from the 1912 World Series, and six covering the Pirates (one of which pictures Wagner and Nap Lajoie) during spring training in 1911. Many of the slides display descriptive text in addition to the images, while four are color tinted. A complete inventory list can be found on our website. All of the slides measure 4 x 3.25 inches and are in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Total: 25 slides. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
