Offered here is one of the most unusual team images we have ever seen. The photo pictures eleven formally attired members of the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates sitting on what appears to be a precarious rock formation overlooking a cliff. Honus Wagner is clearly identifiable seated in the center of the back row, as is team owner Barney Dreyfuss in the front. Also included on the 1902 Pirates roster, most or all of whom are presumably pictured here, were Fred Clarke, Tommy Leach, Jack Chesbro, Chief Zimmer, and Deacon Phillippe. A vintage scripted notation on the reverse reads "Pittsburgh BBC at Chatanooga [sic], Tenn. 1902." Through magnification, one can see that the mounted plaque to the right of the players is titled "Battle of Wauhatchie," which was a Civil War battle that took place in Tennessee. This photo was most likely taken early in 1902 as the team traveled north following spring training. This rock formation was obviously a frequent tourist site, as we have seen other photos of people posing at the same locale. The photo (7.25 x 5.25 inches) displays a number of minor edge tears that are hidden by the matting and light surface wear. In Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13.5 x 11.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
