1860s glazed-ceramic children's "ABC" plate featuring an illustration captioned "Base Ball Pitcher. This is one of a series of baseball "ABC" plates issued during the period. They are called "ABC" plates because the alphabet is embossed around the perimeter of each plate as a learning tool for children. In the 1860s plates were produced featuring many different subjects of special interest to youngsters, which presumably would make learning the alphabet all the more enjoyable. "ABC" plates featuring baseball images are both rare and highly desirable today. The plate (7 inches in diameter) displays modest wear commensurate with its age and former use, including a few tiny spots of discoloration. The transfer illustration in the center remains bold and distinct. In Excellent condition overall. Together with an 1872 Beadle's baseball guide (Fair condition; missing back cover). Total: 2 items: plate and guide. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
