New York Yankees payroll check, dated “3/15/87,” made out to Hall of Fame outfielder Rickey Henderson. The check, issued in the amount of $27,737.16, has been endorsed by Henderson in black ink (grading “9”) on the reverse. Signed on the front in blue ink by two New York Yankees front-office officials. The check features the New York Yankees “Top Hat” logo and is labeled “Payroll Account.” This is the first Rickey Henderson New York Yankees payroll check we have ever seen. 1987 marked Henderson’s third season in New York. Playing in only ninety-five games, Henderson finished the year with 17 home runs, 37 RBI, 41 stolen bases, and a .291 average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009 and is the all-time leader in stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295). The check (7.25 x 3.25 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
