Draper & Maynard "Ted Kluszewski" endorsed baseball, signed and dated by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb on a side panel. Cobb has inscribed the ball in black ink (grading "5/6"): "To Jane Ridgeway from her friend Ty Cobb - 1/20/60." This ball comes with an interesting provenance. According to our consignor, this ball originates from a hospital nurse who was taking care of Cobb at the time. (Cobb was extremely ill during the last few years of his life, with much of it spent in hospitals receiving cancer treatment.) The woman to whom the ball is addressed is the nurse's daughter. As it was related to our consignor, the nurse had been hesitant to ask Cobb for an autographed ball because he had been extremely gruff during his stay. However, one day a group of reporters showed up to interview Cobb and she thought that if she asked him in front of the media, he would be too embarrassed to refuse. She did, and she was right, as Cobb dutifully signed the ball while the reporters looked on. The ball has been coated with a heavy, uneven, layer of protective shellac and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
