This collection includes the 1960 and 1961-1962 Fleer Baseball Greats sets, each featuring old-timers. These were extremely substantial and significant sets issued by Fleer, as it battled as best it could to be a part of the baseball-card market in a world in which Topps had exclusive contracts with virtually all modern stars. Ted Williams was the one current star under contract with Fleer, and he appears in the 1960 set (on the heels of the marketing of the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set) as an added draw for kids. These sets introduced baseball history to many youngsters, and are favorites with vintage-card collectors to this day. Seven cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. 1) 1960 Fleer Baseball Complete Set (79): Condition is 32% Nr/Mt-Mt (including a couple Mint), 25% Nr/Mt, 19% Ex-Mt, and 24% lesser (mostly Ex and mostly due to centering). Keys: #3 Ruth (EX/NM 80), 28 Gehrig (NM 84), 42 Cobb (20/80 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 62 Wagner (30/70 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt+), and 72 Williams (NM+ 86). Duplicates (20, including 18 different): Condition is eight Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt and twelve Vg-Ex to Ex. Keys: #10 Speaker (Ex+) and 13 Sisler (Ex-Mt). 2) 1961-1962 Fleer Baseball Complete Set (154): Condition is 44% Nr/Mt-Mt (including a few Mint), 38% Nr/Mt, and 18% Ex to Ex-Mt (including one lesser). Keys: #1 Baker/Cobb/Wheat (slight diamond cut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 14 Cobb (NM/MT+ 92), 31 Gehrig (NM/MT 88), 43 Hornsby (MINT 96), 75 Ruth (NM 84), and 152 Williams (Nr/Mt). Duplicates (27, including 19 different): Condition is Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, with a couple Nr/Mt-Mt. Keys: three #43 Hornsby (Nr/Mt-Mt, Nr/Mt, and Ex-Mt) and four 59 Mathewson (two Nr/Mt+ and two Nr/Mt). The early Fleer sets are among the most interesting and overlooked sets of the era. This is an extremely attractive pair of these popular sets. Total: 280 cards (233 cards representing two complete sets, plus 47 duplicates). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
