Complete 1951 Topps "Red Backs" set, including nine cards graded and encapsulated by SGC. The set is technically in mid-to-high grade but clearly with a superior appearance. The landmark "Red Backs" set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball-card sets ever issued by Topps. Condition is 15% Nr/Mt-Mt, 65% Ex (including a few Ex-Mt), and 20% Vg to Vg-Ex (including one Gd). Keys: #1 Berra (EX/NM 80), 4 Stephens (VG/EX 50), 5 Rizzuto (Ex), 8 Wynn (Nr/Mt-Mt), 13 Mitchell (NM/MT 88), 14 Terwilliger (NM/MT 88), 15 Kiner (Ex), 20 D. DiMaggio (Ex), 22 Feller (Ex), 24 Bauer (VG/EX 50), 30 Spahn (NM/MT 88), 31 Hodges (NM+ 86), 38 Snider (EX+ 70), 39 Kluszewski (Ex), 43 McDermott (NM/MT+ 92), and 50 Irvin (Vg/Ex). Most cards in the set, including the lesser-graded cards, have a bright, crisp Near Mint to Nr/Mt-Mt appearance but have been technically downgraded due to the very tiny surface factory wrinkles that are natural to the set and related to production. This set represents Topps' first major effort in the baseball-card business. The 1951 "Red Backs" Topps set is among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represents an extraordinary value. Total: 52 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
