Collection of thirty-five different cards from the 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life set, highlighted by two Hall of Famers. Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in 24 series of 12 cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. This collection represents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a remarkable selection of high-grade M116 Sporting Life cards. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. SGC Grading Composite: NM+ 86 (5 cards): Chase/pastel, Davis/pastel, Street, Summers/black back, and Willett. NM 84 (11 cards): Byrne, Dooin/pastel, L. Doyle/pastel, Hartsel, Hoffman, Hofman, Lobert, Simon (PSA NM 7, 300 Subjects back), Sullivan, B. Sweeney (scarce series), and Wiltse. EX/MT+ 82 (2 cards): Engle and Lennox. EX/NM 80 (6 cards): Doolan, Grant, D. Miller, Schlei, H. Smith, and He. Wagner. EX+ 70 (4 cards): Carrigan, Overall, Waddell/black back (HOF), and White. EX 60 (4 cards): Bender/pastel (HOF), Bush, Camnitz, and Pelty. VG/EX+ 55 (2 cards): Devlin/black back and McQuillan/Philadelphia, pastel. GOOD 30 (1 card): Austin (300 Subjects back). Each card is bright and clean both front and back, and with boldly printed reverses. Many collectors consider M116 to represent one of the era's most exceptional values. Despite being so similar in design to, and far rarer than, their T206 counterparts, they are assigned substantially lower values in price guides. This is a very impressive-looking group with most cards having an appearance superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. The equivalent SMR value for the group (factoring the thirteen half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $4,415. Total: 35 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
