Presented is an extremely attractive collection of forty-seven different cards from the 1948-1949 Leaf Gum “standard” set plus two variations for a total of forty-nine cards, highlighted by twelve Hall of Famers including Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial's rookie card, Warren Spahn's rookie card, and Honus Wagner. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. This collection represents a near-complete set of the forty-nine cards in a "standard" Leaf set (the remaining forty-nine cards in the set are from the rare "short print" series, which are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term). Missing only two cards for completion of the standard set: #76 Williams and 79 Robinson (both are offered as separate lots in this auction). 1948-1949 Leafs are without question one of the most difficult postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. PSA grading composite: NM 7 (9 cards): #10, 17, 31, 57, 77, 82, 86, 106 Boudreau (HOF), and 128. EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #39. EX-MT 6 (13 cards): #22, 26, 27, 42 (black cap), 47, 56, 61, 65, 73, 84, 97 Marion RC, 111, and 159. EX 5 (6 cards): #28, 53 Vander Meer, 59 Appling (HOF), 70 Wagner (HOF), 72, and 125. VG-EX+ 4.5 (2 cards): #38 Kluszewski RC and 139. VG-EX 4 (11 cards): #14, 29, 32 Spahn RC (HOF), 42 (red cap), 49, 50, 91 Kiner RC (HOF), 95, 102, 117 Gordon (HOF), and 136 Aberson (short sleeve). VG+ 3.5 (2 cards): #11 Rizzuto RC (HOF) and 83 Doerr (HOF). VG 3 (2 cards): #4 Musial RC (HOF) and 46 Mize (HOF). GOOD+ 2.5 (2 cards): #1 DiMaggio (HOF) and 3 Ruth (HOF). GOOD 2 (1 card): #136 (full sleeves). A few upgrades would make this an exceptional high-grade set of one of the most popular of all postwar bubble-gum card sets. This is a very impressive-looking mid- to high-grade set with several significant highlights including particularly attractive examples of key cards Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, and Warren Spahn. The Honus Wagner card in the 1948 Leaf set has always been a favorite with collectors as he is pictured with chewing tobacco. The SMR value for just twenty-nine of the forty-nine graded cards (not including cards graded less than EX 5, which includes almost all the Hall of Famers) is $2,330. Total: 49 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
