While most collectors are familiar with the 1936 S&S playing cards, all fifty-two of which feature individual photographs of Major League players (including nineteen Hall of Famers), few have ever seen the original game box and components. Offered here is rare near-complete example of "The National Game," issued by the S&S Games Company of Chicago, Illinois. The colorful graphics on the box lid picture an illustrated scene of a game in progress, with the title of the game boldly lettered along the top: "The National Game - A Base-Ball Card Game." The manufacturer's name appears along the base. The interior components are composed of the fifty-two different playing cards, a colorful wooden scoreboard (4.25 x 2.5 inches), a directions card for playing the game (Vg), and a directions card for use of the scoreboard. (Vg-Ex+). The cards are in Nr/Mt or better condition overall, with six lesser (ranging from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt). Keys: Dickey (Nr/Mt-Mt), Foxx (Ex+), and Ott (Vg-Ex). The large-size display box (5.25 x 4.25 x .75 inches) is in modest condition overall, but is noted for its scarcity compared to the traditional small-size variety. The scoreboard remains in Excellent condition. A rarely offered complete set with original game components. Total: 54 cards plus box, scoreboard, and two directions cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
