Issued in 1936 by National Chicle, and catalogued R313 in the ACC, this large format (3-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches) black-and-white series is known to collectors as "Fine Pens" because of the thin printing used for the facsimile autographs. Offered is a very presentable complete set of 120 cards. The high quality photographs used to produce this set make them among the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. This set has received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era, and a case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all 1930s baseball issues. Condition is 35% Vg-Ex to Ex (mostly Vg-Ex), 36% Gd to Vg, and 29% lesser (including one trimmed). Keys: Averill (Gd+), Berg (Ex), Cronin (Vg), Cuyler/Hartnett (Pr-Fr due to back damage), Dickey/Greenberg (pen on reverse, otherwise Vg+), DiMaggio (Fr due to tape residue on two corners), Ferrells (Vg+), Fox/Cochrane/Simmons (erased pencil writing on reverse, otherwise Vg), Frisch (Vg), Gehringer (Pr), Gomez/Ruffing (color added, otherwise Pr), Gomez (85/15 L/R, otherwise Ex), Goslin (Vg-Ex), Greenberg (Vg+), Grove (erased pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Harris (pencil writing on reverse, otherwise Vg), Hornsby (Vg-Ex), Hoyt (Vg), Mack/McGraw (Fr), Medwick (ink stamp and pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg), Simmons (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Stengel (Ex), Traynor (Vg-Ex), Vaughan (Fr due to pinholes), Wagner (Pr), and Waners (Vg). Total: 120 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
