Issued in 1936 by Goudey Gum, and catalogued R314 in the ACC, this large format (3-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches) black-and-white series is printed on thin stock and is known to collectors as "Wide Pens" because of the thick printing used for the facsimile autographs. R314 Goudey premiums were not sold in "packs" like 1933 Goudey but were actually handed out from behind the counter at candy stores with purchases of Goudey gum. Offered is an exceptional near-complete set (104 of 120 cards). R314 premiums have received very little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are larger than standard cards, were one of the last cards to have holders for encapsulation due to their size, and are blank-backed with no identification of the issuer. A case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. Condition is 40% Vg-Ex to Ex, 40% Vg, and 20% lesser (averaging Fr). Keys: #2 Averill (Vg+), 18 Cochrane (Vg+), 19 Combs (Ex), 24 Cuyler (Gd), 28 Dickey (Vg-Ex), 33 Ferrell Bros. (Fr), 38 Frisch (Vg), 40 Gehringer (Vg), 42 Gomez (Ex-Mt), 43 Goslin (Vg-Ex), 50 Harris (Gd+), 58 Hoyt (Fr-Gd), 63 Klein (Vg-Ex+), 68 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex), 70 Lopez (trimmed, otherwise Gd), 75 Medwick (Vg), 98 Simmons (Pr), 109 Vaughan (Ex), 112 L. Waner (Vg), and 113 P. Waner (Vg-Ex). Missing only the following cards for completion: #4, 14, 16, 21 Cronin, 26, 29 DiMaggio/McCarthy, 31 R. Ferrell, 39, 45 Greenberg, 51 Hartnett, 55, 69 Lombardi, 97, 99, 114, and 116. Total: 104 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
