Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Spectacular high-grade N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Cap Anson. Only one example grades higher by SGC (a single NM 84). This is a particularly stunning card. The Mayo of Anson is a very significant 19th-century card as it is one of the very few that feature Cap Anson from his playing days as first baseman and manager of the Chicago Colts (later Cubs). Though he was the premier player of his day, for some reason Anson is represented by only two poses in the N172 Old Judge series (and one of those, of course, is the incredibly rare "Anson in uniform" pose, of which there are only several known examples). Bright and crisp, with a bold portrait, no creases, and with only the slightest wear to the extremely condition-sensitive edges and corners. This is an extraordinary card in all respects, one of the finest and most impressive of all 19th-century cards, and one of the finest Cap Anson Mayo's in existence. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
