Scarce complete set of twenty-eight cards from the 1948 Swell Bubble Gum "The Babe Ruth Story" issue. This set was created using black-and-white stills from the 1948 Allied Artists release The Babe Ruth Story. This unintentionally comical biography, starring a miscast William Bendix in the title role, is considered by many to be the worst sports movie ever made. The reverse of each card features a brief description of the scene from the front as well as a redemption offer for an autographed picture of Bendix as Babe Ruth in exchange for five gum wrappers. The complete set is extremely presentable overall, with ten cards grading Ex to Ex-Mt, three cards grading Vg to Vg-Ex, and fifteen presenting as Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt but displaying evidence of a very slight trim under close inspection, possibly hand-cut from a sheet at one time. This is a very attractive and rarely offered complete set of this unusual issue. Total: 28 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
