Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA (submitted by REA). The legend of Joe Jackson is monumental in our hobby. Though he was one of the greatest players to ever take the field, his banishment from the game has made him even larger than life. The offered card was produced exactly twenty years after Jackson and seven other "Black Sox" were banned from the game by Judge Landis for throwing the 1919 World Series. Interestingly, the back of this card makes no mention of this; rather, it states that "he was traded to the White Sox in 1915 and was with them until he stopped playing after the 1920 season." Unfortunately for collectors, there are few vintage cards of Joe Jackson. This 1940 Play Ball card is one of the few and is particularly fascinating as it was issued when the memory of the scandal was still very fresh in the minds of baseball fans. This is an attractive, midgrade example of one of Joe Jackson's most classic cards. The card presents with near-perfect centering, even wear to the corners, and light toning, common to the issue. The card is free of any creases but has been downgraded due to a surface scratch on the upper right portion of the background. The reverse is clean with bold print. This is an outstanding example with exceptional eye-appeal of this classic Jackson card. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
