Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Exceptional example of Lou Gehrig from the W553 series. Issued by Marble Bubble Gum Novelties as part of a series depicting sports and movie stars, this pink duotone card features a classic batting pose of Gehrig surrounded by an ornate frame. (For many years it was unknown who issued this set. In 2009 it was discovered that W553 is actually a gum card set issued by Marble Bubble Gum Novelties of Philadelphia, and should have really always been catalogued as an "R" issue. Fourteen unopened Marble Bubble Gum packs proving this were part of the extraordinary unopened 1920s and 1930s pack and box find offered at REA in 2009.) A facsimile signature and "New York/American League" are positioned in the lower right corner. The offered example has been neatly hand cut with generous borders. A flawless image, strong centering, light wear to the corners, and a clean blank reverse. A wrinkle across the upper right corner accounts for the assigned grade. This outstanding example, a key card to the W553 set, would be a significant addition to any Lou Gehrig, prewar, or sample-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
