Extremely presentable example of the incomparable Babe Ruth from the E253 set issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which is of all the more special note as it features photos that are unique to this set. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. Oxfords are printed on somewhat thin card stock that is particularly prone to wear. A complete twenty-card checklist appears on the reverse of each card. The offered card presents as Fair, with creasing and considerable wear to the corners and edges. A small stain is visible below Ruth’s chin. Although this example is almost certainly not trimmed, SGC has assigned an Authentic designation for the miscut appearance of the side edges caused by extensive wear. Boldly printed reverse. A very presentable example from this rare caramel-card set. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
