Presented is an outstanding collection of three different cards from the 1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery issue. Each card is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). This lot is comprised exclusively of members of the Pittsburgh Pirates. These cards are part of an exciting, new-to-the-hobby collection of sixty-five D381s that appear in this auction. The collection has been consigned by the family of the original owner, who collected the cards at the time of issue while living in the New York area. The D381 set is a scarce bread issue produced by New York City-based Fleischmann Bakery for distribution with its products. These large cards (2-3/8 x 4-7/8 inches) are printed on thin stock and feature a coupon at the bottom designed to be clipped away and exchanged (fifty coupons plus fifty cents) for a leather album designed to hold the cards. Many of the surviving examples are found with the coupon clipped, but ideally, each card in this collection is fully intact. This collection consists of the following:
Cooper (GOOD 30), Harmon (GOOD 30), and Kantlehner (GOOD 30). The thin stock makes D381s especially fragile and susceptible to minor faults, including creases, tears, and wear at the corners. While the cards in this collection are generally modest in grade, this remains a very pleasing group of rare sample cards from one of the scarcest and most condition-sensitive prewar bakery-card issues. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
